The Mostra’s educational program reached an international dimension three years ago, when the workshops given by directors Ana Domínguez and Ángel Rueda began to form part of the educational program of the Porto Post Doc festival held in November in the city of Oporto.
On this occasion, these workshops, which seek to reflect on film as a tool for experimental, social and artistic expression, will first come to the Canary Islands, within the framework of the festival La Pinochera.
- ‘Hacia un lenguaje común entre plantas y humanos’ (‘Towards a common language between plants and humans‘) is the title of this workshop to be held this Saturday 16 and Sunday 17, in the entro de Interpretación Patrimonial de Agua García and the Pinolere (La Orotava), respectively, in intensive morning and afternoon schedule. The workshop will be a chance to reflect on the use of film as a tool also in the rural environment. It will be aimed at people of all ages interested in exploring the different dimensions of filmmaking in the countryside and sharing it through a process of collective creation, which will include the collection of plants and field sound recordings, in an environmentally conscious approach.
Film and photography lovers participating in the workshop will be able to create their own celluloid films through phytography, an experimental technique that uses the internal chemistry of plants and flowers to create images on photographic emulsion on photochemical supports such as 16 mm film and photographic paper, together with optical sound and sound field recording. They will also create their own natural prints without polluting products and will put into practice the organic techniques of direct manipulation on the film. With all these elements they will build a collective film where they will develop a common language between plants and humans.
Registrations are open here.
- ‘Criaturas da luz’ (‘Creatures of Light’ ) returns for the third consecutive year to Porto Post Doc, as part of its didactic and training program School Trip.
From November 26 to 27, a new edition of this workshop will be held in the secondary schools of Porto and its metropolitan area that includes artistic training: ES Almeida Garrett (Gaia) and ES Soares dos Reis (Porto). A new generation of artists who had no contact with the materiality of cinema, will be able to experience in a practical way the essence of cinematographic creation and its main elements: light, shadow and movement.
‘Criaturas da luz’ will bring participants closer to the creative, organic and sensitive processes: to the cinema of ideas, the mystery of the light beam and the tactile spell, through the works of Tânia Dinís and the Casa del Sixto Collective, both referents of experimental and analog cinema in Portugal, which will be screened in their original 16mm format for the participating students.
In addition to exploring cinema on film, promoting contact with the primordial device of cinema or familiarizing participants with concepts such as retinal persistence or the properties of the basic elements, the workshops will include activities such as the construction of a camera obscura, the photographic recording of stills printed on film or the handling of analog cameras.
