Beatriz Freire delves into the relationships between the act of weaving and cinema, with a piece in which a “woven” film is accompanied live by the artist working on her loom. As Freire herself explains, “A Texture Map of The Monnegre River is an audiovisual piece that arose from an artistic research project carried out concerning the Monnegre River (Alicante). It comprises three films shot frame by frame in 16 mm. The work puts forward a visual translation of textile notation, using weaving codes as the shooting script, where each frame corresponds to a crossing of warp and weft. It is a textile-filmic experiment that studies whether textile notation applied to analogue cinema can generate a kind of radiance: images that escape a conventional way of looking and open up new ways of perceiving the landscape.”
