All the details of the 16th International Peripheral Film Festival were presented this morning at an event held at the Domus venue in A Coruña by its co-directors, Ana Domínguez and Ángel Rueda. There, they unveiled this year’s image, dedicated to volcanoes, invoking nature as a true force of creation, regenerator of life and a fertile future. The opening session will explore iconic films inspired by volcanoes, including films from the US, Japan, Austria, Italy and France made between 1923 and 2023.
Rueda pointed out that this year’s Mostra coincides with the anniversary of Super 8, which he described not only as a home-movie format, but also as “a way of thinking and one of the great revolutions in cinema”. As for the programme, he praised the formidable presence of established filmmakers from the international avant-garde scene, and also the number of films premiering this year, which were fostered by the Mostra itself: “We’ve been organising creative workshops for over nine years, supporting young people, and contributing to this fertile melting pot so that the volcano inspiring this year’s image can to come to life.”

The co-directors were accompanied at the presentation by the Head of Culture and Tourism in the A Coruña City Council, Gonzalo Castro, the general director of the Axencia Galega de las Industrias Culturais, Jacobo Sutil, and the MP from the Provincial Government of A Coruña, Avia Veira. The director of the Luis Seoane Foundation, Carmen Jiménez, also attended.
In his speech, Jacobo Sutil underlined the diversity of Galician festivals in terms of formats, themes and regional presence, as well as the maturity of the Galician audiovisual sector. Regarding (S8), he stressed that it “makes A Coruña and Galicia an example to follow in avant-garde cinema on an international level”. The provincial MP Avia Veira hailed the fact that the Mostra is always finding new opportunities to grow, presenting an increasingly ambitious programme, and “giving a voice to Galician talent, who see the (S8) format as their way of making their mark”. She also emphasised the Mostra’s connection to the city, which becomes the centre of the world during the festival, “because the periphery and centrality are matters of perspective”.
The Head of Culture and Tourism at the A Coruña City Council rounded off the speeches by congratulating the festival for the image chosen for this year, which represents the creative explosion emanating from (S8), “a cultural initiative seeking to transform reality from the perspective of artistic creation and critical reflection, bringing together tradition and modernity”.

The presentation of the (S8) programme concluded with the announcement of the opening of the period for submitting candidates’ projects for the BAICC 2025/26 artist residencies, promoted by eSe8_LAB and Acción Cultural Española (AC/E) in collaboration with LIFT, the Liaison of Independent Filmmakers of Toronto. BAICC is the only international film creation residency operating in Spain since 2017.
The aim of these residences is to foster a more artistic and auteur cinema, opening up new avenues and giving a filmmaker from Spain or living in the country, the chance to carry out a project in an exclusive international environment. The resulting film will premiere at the next (S8), and will then continue its tour of festivals and art venues around the world. Furthermore, in 2025 these works produced by the Mostra will have their presence amplified by an international tour that will take several of the residency filmmakers and many of their completed works on a tour next autumn that will take in the cities of Toronto, Vancouver, Halifax, Winnipeg and Montreal. This BAICC Canadian Tour is supported by AC/E, LIFT and the Canadian Council for the Arts.
