The Luis Seoane Foundation will be the venue for Desbordamientos, the programme of film performances with productions from Spain, Canada, France, Portugal and Venezuela. They will take place on Thursday 5th, Friday 6th and Saturday 7th, starting at 11 p.m.

One of the (S8) festival’s main attractions is once again the performance film sessions, which will be held in the patio of the Luis Seoane Foundation venue. They will beF held over three evenings, with proposals that in some cases have been created specifically to be presented at the 16th International Peripheral Film Festival.

BAICC PREMIERE AND SINAIS DESBORDAMIENTOS

Such is the case of TORTUGA [pasaje cromático #4], a film by Brenda Boyer created in Toronto during the BAICC artist residency backed by (S8) that will premiere in the session on Thursday, 5 June. In this movie, Boyer presents a multi-projection work in which she experiments with colouring the same shot at different times of day using layers and RGB filters. To do so, she filmed Toronto’s urban parks, creating a film in which the natural environment vibrates through light.

Next up it will be the turn of Sinais Desbordamientos with the Basque collective Tekno Fantasy and LA BELLEZA EN LOS RAYOS DE LUZ FRACTURADOS. This is a film created in 2025 at the Medialab laboratory in Tabakalera (Donostia) and with which the artists Laura Ibáñez López, Camila Reyes and Iker González create a particular visual-and-sound universe including costumes and optical devices during the projection.

FRIDAY 6TH, ALVARADO AND MWAMBU

On Friday 6th June, Valentina Alvarado is returning to (S8) to present her new performance: voy raspando la hoja y la voz. With it, the Barcelona-based Venezuelan artist continues her exploration of the moving image with a critical eye on the diaspora, landscape and gesture. By blending image, text and voice, Alvarado puts forward a sensorial, conceptual journey through the memory of the landscape using 16 mm projection, slides and cassette loops.

The second film of the evening will be Maono Mzimi by the Canadian of Ugandan origin Sonya Mwambu, who focuses the film on the intersections of Sonya’s identities, exploring matters such as race, gender and language. Mwanbo experiments with the connections between them by blending analogue and digital projections and voice, live.

FINALE, MIRE (NANTES) AND LAIA COOP (PORTO)

The last session of Desbordamientos on Saturday 7th will be given by two laboratories committed to experimental cinema: Mire (Nantes) and Laia Coop (Porto). They are both in a European network of spaces that salvage technology dedicated to processing analogue film so as to prevent it from disappearing and create self-run environments for artistic projects. In fact, the festival’s closing ceremony will be a unique opportunity to experiment with one of its technical innovations.

Saturday’s Desbordamientos will begin with Argentique de Nantes, a set of films by Aurélie Percevault and Antoine Ledroit in which they will screen works created by them both since they met at the Mire laboratory. Then it will be the turn of Smokeshow by Aurélie Percevault and Pierre Pierre Pierre, in which they will project onto a smoke screen, like a cinephile ritual, creating furtive images.

The festival will come to a close with the artists Monica Baptista, Rita Morais and Sofia Arriscado from Laia Coop in Porto, presenting Wandering Projection, a film performance created in collaboration with Mire within the European film research project SPECTRAL. Wandering Projection is a night-time mobile session in which they use a portable 16 mm projector designed in Mire that enables films to be projected around the city. This is an unrepeatable occasion in which films by Oskar Fischinger, Kurt Kren, Patrice Kirchhofer, Malena Szlam, Cécile Fontaine, Pedro Paiva and João Maria Gusmão, Gary Beydler and Charlotte Pryce will be shown.
