The sessions for schools at the 16th Mostra de Cinema Periférico in A Coruña welcome over 350 students from the city’s schools. They include a Super 8 screening and a talk with the filmmakers Xacio Baño and Iago Lourido.

With just one week left before the 16th Peripheral Film Festival begins in A Coruña, it was once again the city’s schoolchildren who were able to enjoy a day committed to other cinematographic narratives. They did so at the screenings for schools that have been held at Domus throughout May, with their third session being held this Tuesday, the 27th. On this occasion, more than a hundred students from the IES Menéndez Pidal and the CEIP Concepción Arenal schools turned up. Together with the IES Urbano Lugrís school, they are participating in this educational programme that runs until Monday, 2nd June, the eve of the launch of (S8).
In total, nearly 350 youths between 10 and 16 years of age from different districts of the city are taking part in this experience, getting the chance to take a more artistic and experimental look at cinema, as well as seeing and touching analogue cinema. These sessions begin with a presentation of Super 8, the format that gives the festival its name and which this year is celebrating its 60th anniversary. Originally designed for the home environment, Super 8 played a very important role in the avant-garde artistic scene, but also in creating collective memory through a more personal perspective. One example of this is the film that was shown at the Domus venue, which includes scenes shot in A Coruña in the 1970s, including images of the sinking of the Urquiola.

Xacio Baño | Iago Lourido
Q&A WITH GALICIAN FILMMAKERS
In addition to showing independent cinema and delving a little into the analogue kind, the (S8) days for schools are also a chance to shine the spotlight on Galician creators, several of whose films are also screened. This time it was the turn of Xacio Baño, three of whose productions were presented: Anacos (2012), Ser e voltar (2014) and Platónico, platónica (2024). After the screening, the filmmaker answered numerous questions from the audience, who were very intrigued by the narrative toying with non-fiction cinema in Ser e voltar, one of his most award-winning works, and by the use of artificial intelligence in his most recent film.
Xacio Baño will also be present at the session that ends the pre-festival programme next Monday. In the previous sessions, the guest filmmaker was Iago Lourido from San Sadurniño, who showed the students three of his creations: Sansa Stomp (2019), Velos na Tebra (2024) and Solposto (2025). Lourido spoke of his experience as a filmmaker from the age of 14 until today, when, at just 21, he was selected for the second consecutive year for the Sinais section of the Mostra.
This educational activity is possible thanks to collaboration from the Scientific Museums of A Coruña and the city council’s Department of Education, Training and Technological Innovation, which provides transportation.
