Juana Robles  is the creator of béal, the winning project for this ninth BAICC – International Artistic Residencies for Cinematographic Creation 2025/26. The assessment committee made up of a representative from each of the three entities responsible for the call, AC/E – Acción Cultural Españolathe (S8) of A Coruña and the Liaison of Independent Filmmakers of Toronto – LIFT, decided that this proposal would be selected to be carried out for four weeks between September and October 2025 in Toronto (Canada).

béal is a project that explores the rhythms of the Cabbagetown Boxing Club and its neighborhood—shaped by histories of Irish immigration and working-class resilience. Blending community-based research with analog filmmaking techniques such as in-camera effects, double exposure, and hand-processing, the film explores the layered presence of history, movement, and memory through a textured, rhythmic visual language.

The result of this residency will be premiered at the next (S8) 17th Mostra Internacional de Cinema Periférico in 2026, A Coruña.

Juana Robles (b. 1983, Tortosa, Spain) is an experimental filmmaker based in Kilkenny, Ireland. Her work, often created using analog techniques such as 16mm and Super 8, explores the body, identity, memory, and resilience through immersive, tactile cinema. Drawing on performance and ritual, she blurs the lines between personal and collective histories.

Juana studied at the Lucerne School of Art and Design and the Zurich University of the Arts in Switzerland. Her films have been screened at festivals worldwide, including the Perth International Film Festival, Milwaukee Underground Film Festival, Bogotá Experimental Film Festival, Paris Festival for Different and Experimental Cinema, and Videoex Experimental Film & Video Festival in Zurich. Individual works by Juana Robles are distributed by Light Cone (Paris) and Collectif Jeune Cinéma (Paris).

She is also a co-founder of Out of Focus, an initiative in Kilkenny dedicated to experimental cinema, and has contributed to the experimental film community through her roles at festivals such as Videoex Experimental Film & Video Festival and the Lausanne Underground Film Festival (LUFF).

BAICC– Residencias Artísticas Internacionales de Creación Cinematográfica 2025/26 is an eSe8_LAB project hat has the support of Acción Cultural Española (AC/E), LIFT-Liaison of Independent Filmmakers of Toronto and Axencia galega das industrias culturais (Agadic).
