Multi-disciplinary artist Bill Brand is well known for his preservation work with Super 8 and
other small gauge films. In this lecture he will discuss the changing methods he has employed to restore Super 8 films. He will talk about how similar interests and urges motivate both his preservation work and his work as an artist across mediums; how his film preservation and his film, video, photographic, drawing, painting, and installation artworks all ask similar epistemological questions. With this he will demonstrate how, since the 1970s, digital tools have intertwined with his analog practices. He will also make recommendations for some steps artists can take to preserve their own time-based artworks in our current period of medium proliferation and transformation.
