Iván Zulueta’s unreleased film archive will be inaugurating the fourteenth (S8) Mostra Internacional de Cinema Periférico, on Friday 26 May. It will be the first of seven sessions that we will be dedicating to screening the legendary filmmaker’s legacy. This is footage shot between the 1930s and 1980s, linked to his personal life, Spain’s cultural movements during the Transition and the cinematographic avant-garde. It was acquired in 2021 by Filmoteca Española (the Spanish Film Library), and given structure following extensive research and conservation work, to appear in the cycle “A/Z: Zulueta inédito” (“A–Z: unseen Zulueta”). It is a proposal curated by Josetxo Cerdán, the former director of the Spanish Film Library and Professor of Audiovisual Communication at the Carlos III University of Madrid, as well as Miguel Fernández Labayen, Vice Dean of the twofold degree in Journalism and Audiovisual Communication at the University in Madrid.

The cycle that will be screened in A Coruña includes family films, early recordings and shorts by Zulueta, as well as footage of parties with friends and acquaintances that show the cultural atmosphere of the Movida (social movement) towards the end of the seventies. The images include one of the first demonstrations in Spain in support of LGTBI people’s rights, and unreleased footage shot while creating his feature film Arrebato (Rapture), a film at the pinnacle of Spain’s cinematography. This footage was believed to have been lost or else its existence was simply not known, so that it now gives us greater knowledge about one of the key creators of Spanish cinema.

Filmmaker, drawing artist, illustrator, director, interior decorator, actor and photographer, Zulueta challenged the barriers between artistic disciplines, forever driven by his passion for images, almost always those in motion. A forerunner of underground and experimental cinema in Spain, Iván Zulueta was in the lineup for our first (S8) in 2010, and a source of inspiration for us. Fourteen years later, we are now hosting this programme from the Spanish Film Library to pay tribute to an artist who opened up new opportunities and languages. A champion of the artistic modernity of a free Spain, Zulueta remains a treasure to be discovered.

The “A/Z: Zulueta inédito” (“AZ: unseen Zulueta”) cycle will be held throughout the festival and will continue throughout June as part of the extended schedule for the (S8) Mostra Internacional de Cinema Periférico in the venue of the Filmoteca or Film Library of Galicia.
