Emiliano Reyes is the creator of The Toronto Symphony Orchestra Conducting Tchaikovsky (1945), the winning project of this tenth edition of BAICC – International Artistic Residencies for Film Creation 2026/27. The selection committee—composed of one representative from each of the three organizations responsible for the call for proposals—AC/E – Acción Cultural Española, (S8) Mostra Internacional de Cinema Periférico da Coruña, and Liaison of Independent Filmmakers of Toronto (LIFT)—selected this project from among twenty proposals to be carried out for four weeks between September and October 2026 in Toronto, Canada.
The Toronto Symphony Orchestra conducting Tchaikovsky (1945) is articulated around structuralist principles and the reinterpretation of found footage: a piece shot on 16mm film in Toronto in 1945. It is a technically sophisticated, innovative, and refreshing project that also embraces visual abstraction and tactile intervention. The film will transmute into an abstract choreography of rhythmic light, rubbed grain, and kinetic textures, where the visual collapse of the image accompanies the dramatic intensity of Tchaikovsky’s composition.
The result of this artist residency—conceived as a multi-screen installation featuring three 16mm projectors—will have its world premiere during the upcoming (S8) 18th Mostra Internacional de Cinema Periférico in June 2027, in A Coruña.
