BAICC INTERNATIONAL RESIDENCY FOR FILMMAKING

1. PRESENTATION

The (S8) International Peripheral Film Festival (Mostra Internacional de Cinema Periférico) is a cinematographic event that highlights concepts such as recovering films and historical archives, working closely with new ways of expressing cinema, with avant-garde and contemporary filmmaking. Since its beginnings, the Mostra has been committed to the work of promoting, disseminating and calling for analogue film formats, creating a unique space within the national Spanish panorama.

LIFT is a non-profit organisation of international prestige created in 1981. It is directed by artists and dedicated to promoting excellence in filmmaking through training, providing technical and production resources, and disseminating the works created in these formats.

Acción Cultural Española’s aims include organising and holding exhibitions, events and initiatives to disseminate and promote Spain’s cultures and the professionals involved with them, boosting their international projection and network-building between professionals and institutions.

This selection process for residencies aims to continue along a line of work that seeks to blaze new trails for emerging creators, helping bring about connections for exchange with an institution of international significance such as LIFT, the Liaison of Independent Filmmakers of Toronto.

2. GOAL

LIFT, the Liaison of Independent Filmmakers of Toronto, together with the (S8) Mostra Internacional de Cinema Periférico film festival and Acción Cultural Española (AC/E) holds a selection process to take part in a residency to produce an audiovisual piece shot in analogue format (35 mm, 16 mm, Super 16 mm, 8 mm or Super 8 mm) in Toronto, Canada.

3. BENEFICIARIES

Anybody born or residing in Spain with an acknowledged artistic track record who wishes to carry out an audiovisual project in analogue format can take part in the tender. Candidates must give proof of their knowledge of the English language in their CV.

Applications must be submitted individually with a maximum of one application per person. Each application is to be presented in two versions: English and Spanish.

4. DURATION

The residency lasts between four and six uninterrupted weeks to be chosen between September and October 2023, subject to the availability of the LIFT facilities in Toronto. If the beneficiary goes absent during the agreed dates without a pertinent reason, the residency may be cancelled as a result, in addition to the aid granted in each case.

5. SUBMISSION OF APPLICATIONS

Registration must be carried out via the online form, filling it in and providing a link to download their project in Spanish and English, both in PDF (maximum 10 pages), which must include:

  • An explanation of the project and reasons for carrying out the residency in Toronto, indicating the estimated duration and the preferred dates.
  • Work calendar.
  • Graphic material to give a better understanding of the project.
  • Applicant’s CV (maximum one page).
  • Expected technical and production needs.
  • Budget.

Applicants should demonstrate the originality and authorship of the projects they submit, and guarantee that they legitimately hold all of the intellectual property rights over them, expressly exempting the three institutions organising the residency from any liability for damages that could arise in this regard.

6. DEADLINES

Applications may be submitted until 23:59 (GMT+1) on Sunday 18 June, 2023. No applications received after the deadline will be accepted.

On Tuesday, 27 June, 2023, the name of the person selected will be announced on the organisers’ websites.

The selected candidate will be contacted directly by the programme coordinator and must confirm acceptance in writing within 48 hours of notification.

7. SELECTION CRITERIA

The candidacies will be assessed by a committee made up of a minimum of three members from the organising institutions, based on the following criteria:

  • The proposal’s originality, quality, innovation and consistency (40%).
  • The project’s coherence with the candidate’s career as a whole (10%).
  • The suitability of the proposal as regards its schedule for implementation and the resources provided by LIFT (20%).
  • The applicant’s CV and past career (30%).

Based on these criteria, the Evaluation Committee will choose a candidate and two possible replacements. The decision will be final. The Evaluation Committee will decide on any circumstance not provided for in these rules and may declare the tender void.

Simply by submitting a project to the tender, the participants accept these rules. In the event that an application that has been granted the award must then be withdrawn, the candidate must give notification of this in advance.
