The eSe8 cultural association, which organises the (S8) Mostra Internacional de Cinema Periférico da Coruña (A Coruña International Peripheral Film Festival), begins its tour with the programme ‘Ultreia et Suseia, Galician Cinema’, a collection of monographs on a variety of our  most outstanding filmmakers, acting as a platform to make their work visible to the general public.

Following its online version in the last festival, with documentary clips on the work of Carla Andrade, Diana Toucedo, Xisela Franco, Tono Mejuto and more, the programme will be visiting different Galician towns, introducing new authors such as María Ruido, Eloy Domínguez and Xacio Baño.

The intention is for our avant-garde filmmakers to reach the entire public throughout the country, revitalising the culture on offer in the towns along the Camino de Santiago route and its different offshoots, and fostering cultural exchange among the local populace. Beyond (S8) and other more “peripheral” film festivals, we would like the general public in different Galician towns to get to know their filmmakers first-hand, making them more familiar with what these events provide: contact not only with the films but with the creators, with their work and motivations; and with the importance of their cinema despite not always being on the more mainstream circuits.

‘Ultreia et Suseia, Cine Galego’ kicked off on 1 October at the Avenida de A Rúa Cultural Centre (Ourense) with an interview with Eloy Domínguez and the screening of the film Os Corpos, (2020), as well as an interview with Xacio Baño accompanied by the screening of the film Ser e Voltar, (2014). The next stops on the tour will be:

The creator Álvaro Feldman is carrying out his BAICC residency at LIFT in Toronto

After winning the sixth BAICC International Artistic Residencies for Cinematographic Creation with the project TORONTONTERO, Álvaro Feldman has been in Canada since 5 September to develop his proposal until next 16 October. The resulting performance can be seen in its world première in A Coruña at the next (S8) in the first week of June 2023.

In TORONTONTERO, Feldman is constructing a mechanism to enable him project in both directions, but also to explore the possibilities of optical copying and different manual film developing techniques to achieve a variety of structures with which to construct his film. It is a film that is as reversible as possible, which can be seen in both directions simultaneously, forwards and backwards, so that the experience of seeing it in opposite directions gives rise to a map of images that are repeated infinitely but never in exactly the same way.

BAICC International Artistic Residencies of Cinematographic Creation is a project by the eSe8 laboratory that can count on the backing of the Institute of Cinematography and Audiovisual Arts (ICAA) for its line of aid to laboratories and incubators to create and carry out audiovisual projects, as well as from AC/E Acción Cultural Española and LIFT, the Liaison of Independent Filmmakers of Toronto.

Our visit to the Proyector Festival (Madrid)

This year the Proyector Festival held its 15th edition, disseminating art, its most contemporary expressions and the new languages and formats of the moving image, acting as a point of reference for video art, video installations and video performance in Spain.

Ana Domínguez and Ángel Rueda, the directors of the (S8) Mostra Internacional de Cinema Periférico da Coruña, gave the talk “Desbordamiento de la imagen. Más allá del Val del Omar” (“Overflow of the image. Beyond Val del Omar”). Within it, they spoke to the attendees about terms such as “expanded cinema” and “filmic performance”, and reviewed some of the illustrious names that have appeared at the Mostra over its thirteen editions.
