NICOLE REMY TRAVELS TO AUSTRALIA WITH HER PROJECT “IN A CERTAIN LIGHT”, ESE8_LAB 2023 AWARD WINNER FOR CREATION

Nicole Remy’s project was one of the six selected in last year’s INPUT, our space for Advice on Cinematographic Projects in Development. Tutored by Albert Alcoz, a filmmaker, researcher, programmer and Doctor in Cinematographic Theory, Analysis and Documentation from the Pompeu Fabra University of Barcelona, In a certain light (Con cierta luz) won the eSe8_LAB 2023 creation award from out of all the projects participating.

Thanks to this award, the filmmaker was able to travel to Melbourne (Australia) to work hand in hand with two of the global leaders in experimental cinema, Richard Tuohy and Dianna Barrie, in their NanoLab facilities.

In a certain light puts forward the idea of working on a Super 8 film cartridge itself, using the pinhole technique. With an aluminum plate above the viewfinder enabling six frames of film to be seen, with a hand-sliding shutter, light bathes the film through the holes.

In Con Cierta Luz, my intention is to work with two Super 8 cartridges. Both record film at the same time and with the same framing, except that their positions are reversed: one films backwards and the other to the right. […] Some tension is created between opposing directions, both on screening the image (the same one projected in different directions) and with the filmed image advancing forward. I seek to capture another type of movement.”

The end result is to be released in a world premiere at the next (S8) 15th Mostra Internacional de Cinema, which will take place in A Coruña from 31 May to 9 June.

ULTIMATE FORM: COLLECTIVE FILMS FROM LAV

Collective cinema produced by LAV (Madrid) comes to Melbourne thanks to (S8)

Next 24 March at The Brunswick Green in Melbourne, the programme Ultimate Form: Collective Films from Lav will be held. It is a session that has resulted from the fruitful collaboration between the (S8) Mostra Internacional de Cinema de A Coruña and the LAV in Madrid.

The Artist Film Workshop (AFW) is an artists’ collective and non-profit organization that has screenings, resources and training workshops for filmmakers and people interested in the art of film in the Melbourne area. Making the most of the fact that a former LAV student, Nicole Remy, was in Melbourne, it invited her to present a selection of films that go over the film works produced in the latest Master’s courses held by the LAV.V.

Founded in 2014 by Pablo Useros, LAV is an experimental learning space dedicated to avant-garde audiovisuals and cinema. The screening will bring together a selection of films that go through the latest creations made collectively by the students participating over the last few years in the Master’s laboratory held annually in Madrid.

The session will be attended by Richard Tuohy and Dianna Barrie, who will act as hosts and introduce the selected films together with Nicole Remy.

The programme is as follows:

  • FILMS-CUADRO #01 – Water Lilies, Monet. 16 mm, colour, 2 min. 2022
  • MALLARMÉ FILM. 16 mm, b/w and colour, 12 min. 2022
  • ANALYSIS OF A SPACE. MAIN SQUARE X3 (ANÁLISIS DE UN ESPACIO. PLAZA MAYOR X3). Super 8, b/w, 14 min. 2024
  • TWELVE TONES FILM. 16 mm, colour, 18 min. 2023
  • ULTIMATE FORM #06. 16 mm, colour, Jaime Guerra, 3 min. 2019

Curated by LAV and Nicole Remy.

Both programmes are part of the series of activities promoted by eSe8_LAB and are funded by the European Union – NextGenerationEU as part of the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan of the Institute of Cinematography and Audiovisual Arts, via aid to laboratories and incubators to create and carry out audiovisual projects.
